Katy lifting weights for powerlifting

The Burton Girls Powerlifting team ended their season on a high note, sending Senior Katy Whitfield to the Regional Powerlifting meet in Bosqueville on Saturday, February 26th.  Whitfield qualified for the regional meet by finishing 9th overall in her weight class during invitational lifting.  At the Regional Meet, Whitfield hit a new personal record of 240 lbs in squat, propelling her to an 8th place finish overall.  The Lady Panthers bid farewell to Katy Whitfield, but will return to powerlifting for the 2025 season led by current Junior, Avery Applewhite.

The Burton Boys Powerlifting team is currently in preparation for the Regional Powerlifting meet this Saturday, March 9th in Colmesneil.  Five Panthers made the cut this year, the most in team history.  First year lifter Jackson Morey, Jr. qualified for the 8th place spot in the 123 weight class.  Joining him there is second year lifter, Hunter Duffy, So. in 5th place who looks to take home a medal for the 2nd year in a row.  Senior Patrick Tavary owns the 7th place spot in the increasingly competitive 308s.  Leading the way for Panthers are first year lifters, Mark Odom, Jr. and veteran Keagan Fenner, Sr., both of whom are ranked 1st in their respective weight class.  Odom holds a five pound lead in the 132s over 2nd place and a ten pound lead over 3rd and 4th place going into what is shaping up to be one of the most competitive weight classes in the Region 4 meet.  Fenner, in the 242s, holds a 60 pound lead over the next lifter.  Finishing 1st or 2nd will win both lifters a spot in the State Meet in Abilene.  Fenner will also be able to punch his ticket to state by moving his combined total to 1500, only 40 pounds over his current best of 1460.
