Trustees Focus on Leadership

(Austin) – Burton Independent School District Board President, Demetrius Colvin, Sr., Misty Lucherk-Board Vice President, Ronnie Hohlt-Board Secretary, and board members Felton Cox, Jeff Harmel, Ande Bostain, Brian Jaeger and Superintendent,

Dr. Edna Kennedy joined trustees and administrators from across the state at the Texas Association of School Boards’ (TASB) Summer Leadership Institute June 16-18 in San Antonio. Approximately 2,200 new and veteran education leaders focused on critical issues facing local districts and discussed best practices for effective board governance and cost-efficient programs. Burton ISD is proud to have had 100% attendance for the second year.

Steve Uzzell, an award-winning photographer, was Thursday’s keynote speaker. He has given a live presentation that became his book Open Roads Open Minds: An Exploration of Creative Problem Solving. Through his photographs, he took a motivating look at how we should approach every problem as an opportunity and every challenge as a chance to learn about ourselves and others.

Laredo native Consuelo Castillo Kickbusch faced poverty, illiteracy, and discrimination. At Friday’s general session, she shared how she overcame challenges to establish a pioneering and distinguished career in the military. During her service, she became the highest-ranking Hispanic woman in the Combat Support Field of the US Army.

Saturday’s general session featured Kai Kight, an innovative speaker and violinist. In his presentation, Kight performed mesmerizing original music and shared stories from his own transformation as an artist. He translated these insights into takeaways that audiences can easily infuse into their own lives and work environments.

Among issues examined during the Institute were legislative advocacy, competitive forces facing public education, community partnerships for student success, school safety, and gender and generational diversity. Each year, the Institute gives new board members important information following May elections, offers practical tips for newly elected board officers, and provides experienced trustees with details of innovative practices and emerging trends.

TASB is a nonprofit association established in 1949 to serve local public school boards. Texas school board members are the largest group of publicly elected officials in the state. The districts they represent serve more than 5.3 million students.
